I'm not sure when Open Clipart Library dropped the "Library" and became more of a social media site.  I used to think of it as a good resource for  vector images.  And I guess the good ones are still there, if you want to search them out.  But now, it seems to have become more of an image host (with a lot of really mediocre images).

However, having said that, doesn't mean I think it's a bad idea.  If I were a sketch artist, I might participate.  You should make an entry (maybe one of the bull sketches) and include a link to your topic at IF, in the description.

I have used the L-System extension a little bit.  I'm not quite sure how it could be used in a drawing called a "sketch" though??

The restriction for me, using L-System, is the need to know, or at least have more knowledge than I do, about the math formulas that are needed.  I know, have found, and probably still have local copies of several tutorials that show what kind of formula will draw what kind of shape.  And I have tried to....more or less randomly try different formulas, just to see what happens!  But I don't have any finished images to show, where I used that extension.  (I was trying to make a design that looks like lace - old topic at IF, search "lace")

Mentioned the L-system because with the default settings it produces something close to a thunder-like shape, though using the generated straight segments needs tweaking.
(Hmm now that I mention, I had set it to other parametres before, so need to get back somehow...)


 

I agree that most of the uploaded images are mediocre in some extent. But never thought it would be a reliable source for serious work -for commercial works at least, it is a no-go. Even though there are some extraordinary cliparts uploaded.

Shaping the image of the library is up to the artists contributing.
The library and a simple image host is the same thing isn't it? Then the social media part is just a plus; there are requested cliparts, and it is possible to use auto-tracing by contacting the right adress.


Edit: Got the L-system working; will make images with it when inkscape won't crash on it.

I suppose it CAN be the same thing.  And some image hosts, such as ImageShack and imgur are set up like that.  Not all image hosts though -- imgh.us or dropbox, e.g.  But when it first started as OCLibrary, I thought most of the images were a pretty good quality.  If I needed good vector images, it was the first place I would look.  But now, I would say a large portion of the images are not the kind of quality I would want to use on a website.

It's not necessarily a bad thing (who am I to judge) but to me, it is disappointing.  If I had been in an owner's role there, I would have split out a separate sub-domain for the social media aspect, and kept the "library" part separate, to maintain the quality.  Then maybe have some kind of automated system where after a certain number of pageviews, an image gets transferred from the new sub-domain, to the "library".

But anyway, I hope the daily thing continues there.  But if the one who started it isn't there for the 2nd day.....??

Now, it's the eleventh daily sketch. This time I "got the torch" to tend the fire, so added a spin to the concept.

Let's see if we can pop in the game factor, starting a new series.
The challenge: there is a simple shape in the given clipart; draw your part to it so it represents anything that come to your mind.
Looks like a bird? Draw a beak, a nest, some eggs perhaps. Reminds of a futuristic vehicle? Go for it!
There is no limit, except the shape you see needs to take some part. Good luck!

Oh, that looks like fun!  I don't have an account at OC though.  But we could do something like that here.

I haven't been having any contests or challenges for a while here, because with just us 2, it's kind of boring.  But if anyone were to take some interest, we could start again.
