Use blender (https://www.blender.org/download/) for the start.
With that, you can create the truncated icosahedron with more vertices upon an endge.
Then convert the mesh to a spherical shape, and export it to an obj file.

After that, you can use the same render polyhedrons extension in inkscape to render the exported obj from a given view.

In a nutshell. Although I guess you are not familiar with blender so I will try to make an .obj file for you.

It's a ball with 5 vertices per hexagon edge.

The fill rendering won't be perfect at the edges of the overall sphere shape yet it can give you a much better representation of the wireframe.

Post by: brynn on October 22, 2018, 12:18:59 PM: I have heard that GIMP has a tool which will sort of warp an image around a sphere. I've never used it myself though. I also don't know if it works on a vector image. GIMP does have some very basic vector abilities, but I would guess that this tool would only work on a raster image.

How large is the image you want to make of a soccer ball? If it's life-size or A4 page size, I would say use Lazur's idea or try the GIMP's tool. If it's something much smaller, you could clip the polyhedron with a circle, and just add shading and highlights to simulate the 3d effect.

Although it would be pretty hackish, possibly the Envelope Deformation LPE could help with a little warping of the polyhedron?? Or possibly the Tweak tool, although it would probably take a lot of patience.

- import the ball.obj file
- Extensions menu > Render > 3D Polyhedron

Hhmm, I get error message "failed to import" but it doesn't say why. I wonder if I need to have Blender installed? Or something else?

Post by: Lazur on October 22, 2018, 06:21:22 PM: No, just save the obj file in the right folder -inkscape/share/extensions/3dpolyhedrons or something similar, containing the rest of the built-in 3D content.
Then, when you run the extension in inkscape, choose the "from file" option in the extensions dropdown menu and type in the name of the obj file.

Oh wait, there's also a View tab and a Style tab. I could not swear that I've never touched those, so it's possible something might be set wrong on those. Does the traceback indicate anything about those tabs? Would you like to see screenshots for those tabs?

Of course there's no such file or directory. I put them in C:/brynn/AppData/..../ball.obj

Should I put them in Program Files?

Also, I'm not sure what the double-back-slashes mean. Certainly I will have no path with double-slashes.

What is more strange is that some faces are missing.
