I see... I think in that case, I would just ungroup everything before exporting to optimized SVG. Or do you need the groups in the other software, and not just for editing?

Extensions > Arrange > Deep Ungroup would be helpful for that.

Inkscape Beginners' Questions / Re: Import logo into Inkscape

Inkscape doesn't support layering on import. Everything will be put into the same layer. Is there any object missing from the drawing, or is the drawing itself complete?

Inkscape Beginners' Questions / Text size problem
« Last post by Ink123 on July 29, 2019, 01:44:23 PM »
Hello everyone, my first message here on the Inkscape forum.

I am learning the software at work actually to draw some signs. Instead of asking for the creative cloud Illustrator, I asked for the open source solution and they installed it to me without asking question, great.  :2tu:

But I am trying to figure out something with the text height. Usually in AutoCAD I enter a text height value in mm, for instance, text at 19mm it looks roughly like this (distance between 2 red lines), it's my usual gauge to say, this is 19mm text or 25mm text etc using the capital letters.

But in Inkscape it's different, the height of the text is relative to a box surrounding it. So in order to get my usual 19mm height, I need to scale the text with a 19mm object close to it such as the yellow box. Then i write my sentence and depending of the position of the letter, the H value will vary.

It's complicated for me to assimilate this because the H value is associated to the height of the text box instead of the letter itself.

I can't find any other point of reference then checking the text with the yellow box.. I don't know too much about typography.. but this is not very productive..

If you guys have some tips so I can learn how to work with text?

For example bellow:

1. The text following the yellow box is the original +-19mm with a inkscape box of +-21mm
2. Duplicate to red box, by changing the letters, the H value is not 21mm no more, it's now 28.658mm, the capital letters are still at the same height as the original yellow box.
3. Same thing with the blue and green boxes Blue, the H value is different, the capital letters are still at the same height as the original yellow box.
4. Then Cyan is a duplicate of the green box where I replaced the H value back to 21mm and it's reducing the text even smaller then the original.

I find this so confusing.. I spend a lot of time last week learning Inkscape, like 7 full days, I need to understand this.

Thanks

Inkscape Beginners' Questions / Import logo into Inkscape
« Last post by CaptainHooverBee on July 29, 2019, 11:54:49 AM »
Hello,

I am brand new to Inkscape.
Some time ago I purchased a professional designer to create my company logo.

I do like the ability to modify it in some cases.
As Corel draw was too expensive to me, while I wouldn't work daily with the software, I found "Inkscape".

Unfortunately, I encounter a problem when importing the company logo.
Presently I have it in AI, EPS and APE type.

I could import the file, but the group of layers are missing.
So I do need some help or info on how to solve this problem, in order to use Inkscape with layers.

I searched already a lot, but can't find the trick.

Regards

Maybe instead of writing new code for this, ask places to put a warning note on the download site(s). There aren't that many places to download inskcape, a mass email might suffice to them...    And/or add a warning at the top of the READ ME file.

Schneider TGML graphics editor. It has own drawing capabilities but they are so scary poor that using it as editor has no sense.
It allow to create finished graphic (with animation and other features) for Building Management System of Schneider solutions.

EDIT: next funny thing (funny in sad matter) if there is no stroke="none" then TGML thinks stroke is black.
Fortunatelly inkscape is quite smart on this, but illustrator ... removes stroke attribute.

I dunno. There are a lot of bug reports and other complaints on forums dealing with Microsoft and Adobe products.

Does that make you wonder if MS and Adobe products are flakey?  Or did I misunderstand your comments?  It sounded like you found discussion of bugs to be a bad thing, so I was grasping for some logical explanation.

So do you agree with me that the 92.4 install program not checking the OS and informing me that XP is not supported is a bug? If you really want new users to adopt the product, you would do everything possible to make getting started as problem-free as possible. My suggestion would be that the first thing it would do I check the OS version. If it is not supported, tell the user that and then tell them where to get an older version that does.

Well I guess I can see both sides of the argument.

On one hand, of course it would be convenient for those people who are still using XP, to see such a warning when they try to upgrade Inkscape.

On the other hand, I wonder how many Inkscape users are still using XP?  And how many of them aren't aware that it's officially unsupported?  Just some very quick research, I found one version of XP with EOL (end of life) in 2009.  All the other versions EOL in 2005 and 2006.  So that's 10 years ago in the best case.  It's hard to see it being worth developers' time to write this feature into the code, for so few users who might need it.  (keeping in mind the open source angle, meaning that Inkscape developers are not paid for their work)

If some reason existed for a larger than normal segment of the user population to be using an older os (for example, some compatibility issue with some needed companion program), that might make it more important.  But I can't think of any reason that might be affecting a large group of users.  As far as I'm aware, those who are still using XP have their own reasons, which are not related to Inkscape.

However, if you're aware of some reason why Inkscape users want to keep using XP, that is related to Inkscape, please do explain.  We certainly can refer your comments to developers.

Or of course, because Inkscape is open source, anyone can make a bug report, or discuss issues with developers.  So you're welcome to make your comments directly to developers.  This message explains the different ways you can contact them:  https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?topic=628.0

(By the way, did you find an older version of Inkscape?  In the column on the right side of this page, you can access older versions:  https://inkscape.org/release/ )

If you have the portal blocks and panels visible on the index page of the forum, in the Links section is a link to the FB group.  But like Lazur said, you have to join FB, to be able to see it.

Geez, 1.15 GB is not very much free space.  Sounds like it might be time to either purge a lot of files, or get new computer.  Oh, or maybe defrag would help?

I think the only way to get rid of Undo History, is close file and re-open.
