Hi Friends,
I guess this is not exactly "news", but it's new to me, and I haven't ever seen it mentioned, in my 8 to 9 years learning Inkscape and participating in the community. I'm in the process of writing a News article for the Inkscape website, about the recent Inkscape Hackfest 2015. While researching for that, I came across
Open Font Library, which is a sister project to
Open Clipart (originally Open Clipart Library). So I just added it to the portal block "Links" on the forum index page.
I guess the meager 562 font families (2483 files) does not seem to rival any of those huge font websites. But in light of this
DRM trend, which often includes selling fonts....or more or less renting fonts, by paying the artist per page view, on pages where you use that font (which I think should be illegal), open fonts become a really viable alternative!
And their website includes some really extensive and impressive documentation and support info
http://openfontlibrary.org/en/guidebook/font_design and
http://openfontlibrary.org/en/guidebook/font_design. I've always thought I might enjoy designing a font (what wanna-be graphic artist hasn't?) and now I'm inspired to try it!
Although I have a couple of other projects to finish first
.
Well anyway, looks like it's time to collect a few more fonts
