Title: Change colors of existing AI graphic

HI, Can I change the colors of an .ai graphic that I import and can get rid of the bordering background.

If parts of it are bitmaps, those can't be recolored, at least not like a normal vector object.  If it is a bitmap, selecting it looking at the message in the status bar will say "Image".  If you have clipping masks, they are a different animal too.  Can you link to the AI file?
