Hello,

A new extension of my own has been published, called Origami-Ext.

It is an extension for origamists and origami designers to help drawing diagrams using Inkscape, just the extension I've always wanted to get when I draw my first diagram and that I finally wrote!

It implements for now all the Huzita-Hatori-Justin axioms (1-7) and the Rabbit-Ear solvers plus a very handy Angle N-Section helper (those who know about origami should understand what I mean... :)). And I hope to write others soon if one finds them handy...

It installs currently flawlessly on Linux (an installer is available) and is is fully internationalized (currently there is the English - native version - and a French translation available).

It is written in Perl (I've been writing Perl code for more than 30 years) and has a very few pre-requisites : Perl itself, its XM::LibXML module and, for internationalization, the GNU gettext utilities and the Perl module Locale::gettext, most of them already installed in main Linux distributions.

Any feedback would be appreciated since it is my first contribution to the Inkscape community and I'd love to hear from other paper folders/diagrammers to improve this basic idea: one multi-points segment in input, guide(s) as output.

The link to my GitHub repository is https://github.com/fdesar/Origami-Ext/releases

Enjoy!

François

PS: I apologize in advance for all the typos and grammar faults I made in the extensions messages and docs, not beeing an english native...

Oh yes, I saw those in the gallery earlier, although I didn't get a chance to open them yet.  Are they suitable for beginners to origami?  I guess I don't have a printer....but I think it would be loads of fun to draw the designs with Inkscape, print them out and fold them!

Is there some special kind of paper which origami-ists (??) use?  I mean, I guess you could use any kind of paper, but there must be certain paper with the right qualities for various kinds of work?

No, sorry, it's definitely not an extension for beginners :-(

It's about origami diagrams drawing which mean you already know what are the basic geometric math principles of origami and a reason of drawing origami diagrams!

This extension is not about printing but drawing, so having a printer or not is not relevant.

Yes, origamists usually use special papers, although it is possible to fold simple printer paper or any other kind of paper you get in your day to day life. The most common paper used by origamists is called "kami" (very basic) which is very cheap and you can find it almost everywhere.

If you want to learn origami, I suggest you start looking at tutorials on Youtube (there are hundreds) an some of them are very well done... It's quite a long term learning process (you'll have always something to learn), mostly technical, but you'll get satisfying results quite quickly, but if you really want to progress, you'll need to train a lot, like learning a music instrument:  you'll have to practice as often as possible, but if you start to like it, it's really very fun :)

Enjoy.
