Since you said "embroidery", I guess this is going on some kind of garment?  Like a shirt?  Or I could even see it on a child's blanket

yeah, the dancing flamingos scene will be the embroidery for a summer t - shirt. i'm planning to stamp the shirt first and finish it with the flamingo embroidery. i'm still testing and tweaking the svg to embroidery workflow and the machine output. actual state of work looks ok already, except some corners..

Congratulations, ha1flosse! This turned out great (can you do penguins next time?... ;-) ) - I think it must have been really difficult because of the small size.

Do you feed the pdf files into the embroidery machine? Or what are they for?

yeah, penguins are a nice idea, maybe i'd do some after finishing the flamingo - embroidery.

it's a bit difficult to manage the embroidery - output - setup and match the machines capabilities regarding textile and thread. it has been a bit of trial and error + a bunch of test patterns to have an idea how the embroidery - template should look like.

for example the distance between filled areas and outlines is pretty important, otherwise there are a lot of thread breaks..

edit: the pdf is a rendering print of the embroidery output from embroidery software. the file format for the machine depends on manufacturer, for example melco's .exp is a common format.

i am also delighted by your invitation to the event in kiel, but i think looking at the actual state of inkscape features and plugins for embroidery, it's too early to talk about this. as soon as inkscape can handle all necessary tasks for this specific context properly and is easy to use for beginners as well, we'll talk about your request again.

back to art: since i've been experiencing working at the computer is increasingly stressful and tiring, i am trying to significantly reduce the time spent at the computer by drawing and tracing more and more by hand. so i've been tracing the printed and scaled sketch of the next flamingo, imported the scanned trace into inkscape and traced the scan with inkscape. the result just needs minor tweaks for embroidery output and this means less time spent at the computer and more fun at drawing.

- Mmh. I didn't think we'd have to wait for that...  I'd say this will always require some special knowledge, and that sharing that knowledge could encourage others to try the adventure - as I think that only when there's a demand, embroidery functionality will be incorporated into the program. I'll ask again next year ;-) (or you can just apply, if I forget, of course)

The hand drawn image looks nice, too, and it has got all your experience in it ;-)  Did you already embroider it?

i am proudly presenting you progress at the flamingo - embroidery - project!

another revision of the embroidery template and ready to stitch:



the previous test run uncovered some rough edges, so i changed the bills and feathers a bit.

there was also the idea of a shirt the other day, this was the sketch:



i like the simplicity using stamps, so there was no decision to stamp the print rather than silkscreening.

the stamps, sketched with inkscape and transferred to rubber. i've been cutting them by hand.



i started with the print of the feathers, first layer is white, second layer is colored:

actually, this is a birthday present to a friend of mine. but i like it too and will do another version for myself using blue to light pink color gradients at the feathers. and i am still thinking about a polo - shirt instead of rounded - neck - shirt to create a kind of hawaii - shirt - look to polo - shirt crossover..
