Title: Inkscape 0.92.4. Doesn't see my system printer. Normal?
Post by: uxhamby on January 25, 2019, 02:21:14 PM
Hi,

My installation of Inkscape 0.92.4 5da689c313j, on Linux Mint 19 doesn't see my system printer as set up via CUPS and as generally available to all other apps I run.

Is this normal?

I see quite a bit of 'I can't print from inkscape' traffic on the InterWebs, leading to an apparent general consensus that printing is a two step affair that might or might not get you usable output. The work around seems to be to print to .pdf first and then use a different app to print the .pdf. Seriously, is that what's called for in 2019?

The printer I want to use is an HP Officejet 6500 E709n which otherwise works extremely well.

Thanks,

Brian H.

Unless this is a new bug with 0.92.4, Inkscape should be able to see the printer.

I'm not a Linux user (yet) so I don't know what CUPS is, but someone else should be along before too long, who does know.

Meanwhile, if it's possible to bypass CUPS, you could try that.  (sorry if that makes no sense....)

CUPS:

CUPS (formerly an acronym for Common UNIX Printing System) is a modular printing system for Unix-like computer operating systems which allows a computer to act as a print server. A computer running CUPS is a host that can accept print jobs from client computers, process them, and send them to the appropriate printer.

It's normal if you have installed Inkscape as a snap. Have you?

If so, please read https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-0.92.4/gnulinux/snap/dl/

I don't recall anything about "snap" when I installed.

I installed twice, first from my distribution's package manager but I found that it was one minor version behind at 0.92.3, so I uninstalled that and re installed 0.92.4 using "flatpack".

I had never heard of flatpack before but it seemed to work OK and I got the new version up and running with little effort.

Does any of that offer a clue as to "snap" status?

BTW, how did Chuck Norris get involved?

Thanks,

Brian H.

Read about flatpak sandboxing here:
http://docs.flatpak.org/en/latest/sandbox-permissions.html

To use a perfectly integrated version of Inkscape for Linux Mint 19, use the ppa.
Uninstall any other versions first.
