Yes it is made with inkscape, the 3D effect is actually not that complex to put together, I can post a tutorial if anybody is interested... This is some work I am doing to create vegetation for my swampbot project, how you think it looks? Any ideas to improve it?

I guess you could use gimp to select the roads by color, extract the road network in a separated bitmap and then vectorize it with autotrace. The problem I see is that there are many details (text, road numbers, ...) to complicate the road extraction work...

can't you achieve this result with the interpolate effect?

Why do you want to keep a vectorial graphic format in writer? Once you know the page size, a bitmap format with the right resolution should give the right result. If you use the page (letter, A4) frame as a reference, your drawing should be printed with the right scale.

I don't think there is a way to define a drawing to print size ratio in inkscape.
