How can I go about saving JUST the white image from a background which is black. Or any other color for that matter? Attached is just an example certainly not what I want, but more the technique for how to extra the logo, picture, whatever it may be from the black background.

Whats the best way to achieve this look? Adding a picture into lettering?

What about changing the picture to white and black, and then playing with the contrast? Wouldn't that do the trick?

I am pretty new to inkscape, I am getting pretty good at cutting out images, but now, I am in need of turning images of people into more of a simple image for shirts. Here is an example.
