If this feature already exists in a development version, is anyone working on it to get it finished? It seems to me that this is a very useful feature for all sorts of drawings. Coreldraw has had this feature for many many years.

Re: PDF file opens with text showing as gobbledegook
Thanks for your replies. I eventually found that if I used the Poppler import, then the text came through OK. I don't really understand why this is, but problem solved (at least for this specific case).
Thanks for your help.

[solved] PDF file opens with text showing as gobbledegook
I am trying to edit a PDF file. In Adobe Reader the text in the document appears fine
but when I open it in Inkscpae, it is complete gobbledegook.
How do I open such a file and preserve the text?
Thanks - Rowan

Adding dimsensions to a drawing
I would like a better tool for adding dimensions to a drawing. Ideally it should work with scale drawings too. So if the scale is 1 inch to one mile, and you draw a dimension two inches long it should label it "2 miles". Something like right click on a straight line or the side of a polygo...

Re: Transparency in bitmaps
I have fixed it simply by creating a new vector mask for each of the three objects, which has done the job. But I was hoping for something more automatic, in case something like this happens again with more complex shapes. If the situation is as you have described, how do I select "the raster i...

Transparency in bitmaps
I have a PDF file created by someone else, so I don't know precisely how it was created. When I view the PDF in Acrobat Reader, it looks OK. When I open it and view it in Inkscape, it looks OK. See http://www.sylvesterbradley.org/images/as_seen_in_inkscape.png If I modify it and save it to PDF from ...

Using Inkscape to create PDF with layers
Hi, Can I use Inkscape to create a PDF file with multiple layers? If so, how? When I save a multi layer Inkscape file as a PDF, it does not seem to create PDF layers. What I'm trying to do is to transcribe some old handwritten documents. Ideally I would like the typed word to appear on top of the ha...

Re: Drawing prints with black background
Thank you for your further suggestions. Please note though that I did not use the "print to PDF" option because I wanted a PDF. The first time I printed to an A3 piece of paper, but it used up several pounds worth of black ink, because of the spurious black background, so next time I print...

Re: Drawing prints with black background
Thank you for your suggestions. I created the PDF by printing from Inkscape using the PDFill PDF Writer virtual printer. I don't know why there is an embedded image. I did not intentionally add an image. All the objects I intentionally created were created with the Inkscape vector drawing tools (rec...

Drawing prints with black background
I've just created one drawing, and it printed perfectly. I then modified the drawing, saved it as another name, and printed it again. This time it printed with the whole page covered in a black background. A few of the objects were printed on top of the black background. Any idea why this happened? ...

Can I move the grid origin?
In Inkscape, can I move the origin of the grid? For example, if I am drawing a plan of a room at a scale of 1:50, and I have displayed the grid in mm, it would be convenient to move the grid origin to the top left hand corner of the room. Then each mm on the ruler is 0.05m on the plan. This by defin...

Re: How to change drawing scale (µm, km, 2:1, 1:5, 10:1, ...
Was this question fully answered? I'm new to Inkscape, but I too want to be able to draw drawings to scale. For example, an architectural drawing may be 1:50 or 1:100 or 1:200. I would like to be able to enter positions and distances in real world dimensions, but for them to be correctly scaled on t...
