i had use Xara and it was great. By far the lightest software i had ever use with a smooth UI . But it was very limited for what i need. Inkscape had the same tool and it was free, but not so smooth experience.

illustrator its not great with svg. i will give weekend to research a work-flow, but i think that the only way, is:

i got the latest version 0.48.4 of inkscape and its impossible to save eps.
actually the message is: *. could not be saved

is just me, or this is normal?

the tool its not great problem.
if you know inkscape you can easy learn AI / CorelDraw and vice versa.

i just try to save as: eps (fresh install of inkscape), and does not work, but now it open eps from AI, with respect in page size.
previous version of inkscape does not respect page size.

at least for AI, ps 2 was ( ) better solution, with none compatibility issues
