By distress I mean a worn, weathered or scratched look. I have a pattern I'm using to remove small portions of the logo.

using union on grp of objects, image turns black
I am attempting to distress a logo. When I use union on a group of objects, the entire logo turns black. It doesn't fill in the image completely but the objects turn black. What am I doing wrong? also, is there a better way to distress a logo? I'm new to inkscape...obviously.
