I didn't desaturize the image. And it printed fine.
You could be right though. Perhaps tomorrow I'll test it again.

Importing the SVG here into my file, http://openclipart.org/detail/20914/headoftux_revised-by-baabullah I then reduce the art to about 36x36 pixels and desaturate it to make it black & white. The clip art looks fine on screen at any zoom, but it becomes pixalized when printed out to paper or PDF...
