Well I cant even get to the dialog panel, as when I choose the file to import I immediately get this.

The images are rather small (< 500kb). The error occurs also when I am importing into a blank page. I added my new finding into the EDIT section of my original post. It a good thing I found this out as now I only have to always first open the picture in Paint and save it under the same format as pic...
