This is what I've now done and it's worked. I'm just not sure how it 'got stuck' on that previous setting as I hadn't been into the Text Preference and changed anything. Oh well, never mind.

A while ago I increased the space between letters. I assumed that once the file had been closed down this change would revert back to the default. But it doesn't. Grrr.. When I come to export an image, the size of the image in the 'Export PNG Image' dialogue box is different than the size of the image created. Thanks Brynn for your very speedy response. Inkscape is showing in the Process (Background) Tab I use Inkscape with a mouse and not a graphics tablet. Quite sure there are no Inkscape files open. Several times now when I have closed down Inkscape the programme still keeps running in the background. There is no obvious evidence of this on the desktop however the laptop sounds as though it's working hard.
