You were right though; the raster image beneath was showing through for some reason. I deleted it and was able to color the vector without a hitch.

Trace bitmap alters color of image inadvertently
I have a simple image that is white and gold (#fdb414) without any black line art. I color the image in Gimp and then after opening it in Inkscape I use trace bitmap to change it into a vector, however it alters the color oh so slightly to #fbb213.
