And just a hint. Once you click on the elipse tool, you can hold down your ctrl key while you drag the handle, and that will keep it as a perfect circle, otherwise the sizing of height and width can change.

Are you using the exact same card sizes as they used in the tut? It gets a little frustrating (for me) to do business cards in Inkscape, as there are so many sizes. I'd suggest first looking at the Avery packaging and ensure you are using those exact measurements vs what's in the tut. To be honest, ...

I'd use Brynn's method, but to each his own. I would do 3 groups, one for each charater, that way you can color them separately, then group as one. That allows you to ungroup whenever you want and change the colors.

I really don't like working with tiled clones to be honest, I always get screwed up. I would probably do one color, then duplicate it onto a separate layers, and change the color of the entire thing.
