Re: where is 64bit Windows 7z or installer in normal colour
I am embarrased at my initial posts at finding a 64bit Inkscape with a menu colour problem. I am building a new miniPC system all in a hurry preparating for a move abroad. I last installed Inkscape near 3 years ago, so until now had not looked for downloads. When I went to the Downloads page, as my ...

Re: where is 64bit Windows 7z or installer in normal colour
Answering my own question - found a 32bit EXE version on the sourceforge link below which I first missed with the page focus on the partha link for Windows and not seeing a 2nd Windows section further down. I did completely miss that they were links so thanks for pointing that out, but from that 21 ...

Re: where is 64bit Windows 7z or installer in normal colour
Partha compiles all his versions of software on his site with his signature dark theme. There is no 'official' 64bit Inkscape yet. The dark theme is only unusable if your monitor calibration is really way off or if you are using a monochrome display. There is also no clearly wrong or right color fo...

where is 64bit Windows 7z or installer in normal colour ?
I am trying to install the current final version of Inkscape under Windows 7 Pro SP1 64-bit. Inkscape.org/en/download says 0.48.4 is latest, stating 7z version can be downloaded from partha.com. I rather the 7z version but this site lists only 1 Inkscape file: 'Inkscape-0.48.4-64bit.exe' I download ...

Why unusable all-grey screen colour after new install ?
I last installed Inkscape almost 3 years ago. I forget the exact (Win32bit) version no. I do remember the offline install zip version not easy to find on the inkscape site, and once installed, one part of the screen difficult to read because text foreground/background colour similar, which the forum...

Re: How to convert raster image to vector SVG for Inkscape ?
There IS a way to reduce the number of nodes -- Path menu > Simplify. But what I think you will find is that the more you click it, the fewer nodes are removed each time. And also, you'll start to see corners which appeared to be sharp, are becoming rounded. And in reality, if you zoom into a sharp...

newbie - how to fill objects with repetitive patterns ?
I have 2 situations where I would like to fill a shape with a repetitive pattern. A simple example is a rectangle I want to fill with a pattern of lines drawn with a specified thickness, interval and angle - relative to an edge. Some sort of 'Fill Pattern' for objects seems like the sort of function...

Re: How to convert raster image to vector SVG for Inkscape ?
Sorry, I am a long way from internet access, so prepared this reply at base and took it to a cybercafe for upload. I see since my logon last Friday some further input. My facilities are limited to source streetplan on paper and a digital camera I used to get a digital copy. Over the weekend made pro...

Re: How to copy a drawing into a new Layer of another ?
I found that the need for precise positioning of objects wasn't compatible 'snapping' so it is turned off. Many thanks for the input and recommendation of 'Paste in place'. All of my 'versions' of a particular building share the same global boundary coordinates, which I calculate before starting a n...

Re: How to convert raster image to vector SVG for Inkscape ?
ok, many thanks for those suggestions, will follow them through. Interesting to see 2 observations, one saying easy to do, the other pointing out significant learning curve with either method. In case it affects the choice between the 'Trace bitmap' or manual trace on overlay, the initial bitmap I w...

How to copy a drawing into a new Layer of another ?
How to copy a drawing from one Inkscape file into a new Layer in another, without losing co-ordinate precision ? During my learning curve on Inkscape, initially, rather than using 'Layers' to show alternate floorplans of a building, I ended up creating different files for each floorplan, and as a re...

Re: First time use - stuck on System Units & Creating Rectan
(…) Any advantage using px over cm ? (…) Using 'px' (aka SVG user unit) as base unit might help to achieve/keep better numeric precision by avoiding unit conversions [1] until preparing a document for output to a device with known dimensions (be it Printer, PDF or PNG). Re: First time use - stuck on System Units & Creating Rectan
I assumed you realised a floorplan of a building would be bigger than a A4 sheet of paper. Many objects people may want to draw are bigger than a piece of printing paper, and so I assumed, with the Wikipedia description saying it had coordinate space and appropriate range of scale units, from millim...

Re: First time use - stuck on System Units & Creating Rectan
Thanks for all the helpful feedback. I had a deadline to show someone a provisional floorplan so ploughed ahead that evening, initially using what seemed like the more natural 'metres' user unit. I found the hard way why 'metre' units no use: although I kept the sample shapes previously drawn in tha...

Re: First time use - stuck on System Units & Creating Rectan
Oh my goodness, all of this seems like strange behavior for a fresh installation. Although I remember that you're using the 7z package, it shouldn't be any different from a regular installation. As far as I understand, it should be no different! ....although I guess it's Monday now, so maybe soon.....

Re: First time use - stuck on System Units & Creating Rectan
Hi paul481, .....There could be other reasons why nothing shows up when you draw it....such as you're trying to draw on a hidden layer. So let us know what you learn from the F/S dialog, and we'll go from there (if that doesn't solve the problem). Further to my earlier reply, I have seen (by dblclk...

Re: First time use - stuck on System Units & Creating Rectan
Hi paul481, For the first problem, yes. Document Properties > Page tab > Page Size > Orientation > Resize page to content. You can also remove the page border at the bottom of the same Doc Props page. Although keep in mind that if you end up drawing outside the border, the portions outside the bord...

First time use - stuck on System Units & Creating Rectangles
Sorry to ask about what should be 2 simple matters. I want to create a floorplan, where in this example the outmost border is 12.68m x 6.8m, inside of which, for simplicity, are a number of rectangular rooms of specified dimensions. I first thought of what measurement units to use in coordinate spac...

Re: Where is the Windows Installation Guide ?
@~suv Thankyou very much for your clear complete answers to my queries and suggestions on how to improve Inkscape: your post explaining the difference between the .7z & .exe files should be part of the Window-Readme.txt. As mentioned in earlier post, wherever I have the option, I always download...

Re: Where is the Windows Installation Guide ?
@brnn Thanks for your reply. The inkscape.com file I refered to is not on the website, but contained in the inkscape folder when you unzip the .7z file. You mention tar and compiling but you dont know about that - you shouldn't need to know about that, as it's to do with Linux - nothing to do with M...

Re: Where is the Windows Installation Guide ?
Many thanks for the URL to the various versions of Inkscape for Windows. That was very helpful as it had a 7z version of the latest version. That unpacked as before. Re: Where is the Windows Installation Guide ?
Thanks for your welcome. The first link in your post, points to the same .exe filename I downloaded yesterday. Where is the Windows Installation Guide ?
I am looking for a Vector Graphics Editor for occasional use and various articles pointed me to Inkscape. I use Windows 7 32bit. In January I downloaded what looked like the correct file from your website: Inkskape-0.48.0-1-win32.7z Having found no accompanying Installation Guide, I clicked on Extra...
