Grobe - Thanks for your suggestion. It might be that bug, although as far as I know there are no layers, hidden or otherwise, in the file, just objects. On the other hand I think I read somewhere that layers in inkscape are really just groups of objects, so who knows? Not me. I'm out of my depth. I ...

I use inkscape version 0.92.2 on a mac OS sierra 10.12.5. I am working on a file with a lot of objects and suddenly many of them have disappeared, in an apparently random way. For instance, of 68 numbers, each one a separate object, two disappeared a few days ago and now only eight remain. It is not...
