From what you describe, it looks like to me that the gradient fill that is used in that object is not moving along with the object. You might look through the various tutorials available, for creating this kind of image. They should provide instructions for adding highlights, etc. Try the Tricks and Tutorials forum, pinned/sticky messages, for some good tuts.
