I tried the same thing with this (using the Union to 'weld' it). I had to do it on each individual component. One at a time, and then I was able to import the whole picture successfully into both Make-the-cut and Sure-Cuts-a-Lot. So, I can get it all to work as a work around. Though, I think this is...

You were exactly right.
I had the big design set as a 'group' so a broke it apart, and used union to combine the two and it worked perfectly.
