is there anyway I could convert .ai files to .svg so that I can use them for Inkscape?

Where do I start?
I was planning on learning how to use Inkscape since I was unable to purchase the Adobe Creative suite. I downloaded The Gimp 2.4 as well. Where do I start as a beginner. I am a freelance web and graphic designer and I will be unable to design certain things without the use of a vector based program...
