With 0.91 and Windows 7, you did have to edit the registry, to associate SVG with Inkscape. That shouldn't be needed for 0.92.x. With 0.91 and Windows 7, in my PC, Inkscape associated to SVG on it's own. I'd presume SVGZ files use extra compression, which may be useful for sending big vector files ...

I've been working with Inkscape for about 3 years now.
Inkscape can be difficult and confusing at times, but I wouldn't want to trade it for any commercial program.
