Two problems, freezing and opening/closing files

Postby grey1beard » Wed Jan 23, 2013 4:20 am

I'm running Inkscape 4.8 in ubuntu 12.04.
I've opened the online help manual, then having found my answer, I closed the browser, only to find the 'opening online manual' pop up still running.
If I try to close it, the widows go blank and the whole programme freezes.
While other programmes continue to work if I try them, the only thing I can do to close Inkscape is to reboot.

The second problem is how do I close one file and open a new one - 'close' or 'quit' both close Inkscape.
If I click on 'New', another instance of Inkscape opens.

Is this normal behaviour for Inkscape ?

The 2nd problem isn't a problem, but normal behavior.

The first problem, this is the first I've heard about it. Inkscape's bug tracker is: https://launchpad.net/inkscape. You could try searching to see if a bug has been reported. Or maybe someone here will know something about it :D

Hi HTH.
Many thanks for your detailed reply.
'Stale session' gave me the clue. What I've found, with a fresh reboot and nothing else running, is that if I have finished reading the help manual, and go back to my file, the pop up is still running.
If I then try to close that, with the manual still open, the pop up goes blank, but hangs.
If, however, I close the manual first, then go to my file, the pop up will close as soon as I click on it.

I don't think this constitutes a bug, just a better way of working ;)

Thanks also for the 'kill' route. I knew there was a method, but couldn't work out what it was(even after reading the 'man' page ! )

Regards
John

Lol, love your sig!

You may find that Inkscape is full of these little issues, depending on your perspective. I actually find the description of "stable" to be a bit of a stretch. I certainly would not pay for this kind of stable. But since it's free, and for goodness sakes, still further away from a 1.0 version, than closer to it. Although not by much, it still outperforms most programs' 1.0 version, imo.

If this problem can be reproduced, it probably should be reported. I don't have this problem on Windows though. In fact it happens so fast that I rarely even see a flash of the popup! Mostly it's just like a blink and it's open! (which is really kind of surprising, because I have the general impression that Linux os is faster and more efficient than Windows)

I'm not sure, but I might have an issue with my cpu.
It could now be aging faster than I am, so I'll hang fire until I get the replacement installed( waiting for the conductive wrist strap to arrive).
If I can still produce the hang up, I'll certainly post details of what I can reproduce.

Glad you like the sig - wait till I sort out the avatar ;)

Had this same problem.

Ubuntu 13.10 - Latest Inkscape version.

I was in the middle of a masterpiece that would have changed the world. But because this was the first time ever using Inkscape, I turned to the manual, it opened up Chrome, learned what I needed, then went back to inkscape with.

Here was the error message:
"Your profile could not be opened correctly.
Some features may be unavailable. Please check that the profile exists and you have permission to read and write its contents."

So I closed that window only to be greeted with another window:
'Inkscape Manual' working, please wait...'

I tried to close that window but that only freezes Inkscape and I was forced to loose my work.

I was really impressed with Inkscape until this happened :(
