Windows 7 64 bit
Inkscape 0.91
I am an infrequent user of Inkscape. Recently I updated from 0.48 to 0.91. No problems, all worked well. Yesterday I encountered a text entry problem that I cannot solve.
I open Inkscape and select the Text tool. The default text in the options bar is sans-serif, 4, normal. I click on the canvas. The text now changes to Arial, 12, normal (the default that I have set).
But I want the text to be Arial, 18, Bold. So I change the options bar to reflect this. But this activates a hot key (keyboard shortcut). If I type an e the tool changes from Text to Ellipse and text entry is not possible.
So I am forced to enter text as Arial, 12, normal.
I then go to the menu Text > Text and Font. But even here things are not easy. For example, if I change the font size from 12 to 18 the Apply button is greyed out. So I change the line spacing to 90%. Now the Apply button works, and both font size and line spacing are changed. I then change the line spacing back to 100%.
I googled the problem but only found one very old topic. The solution then was to upgrade to 0.48 which fixed the problem.
I suspect there is a setting somewhere that I inadvertently changed, but I cannot find it.
Problems with the Text Tool
Re: Problems with the Text Tool
There's a bug currently in Inkscape. This makes this order of proceeding necessary:
Click on canvas.
Start typing.
Only now change the font size/typeface/...
After using the settings in the tool bar, you need to change the focus back from the entry field to the text tool on the canvas.
Just click on the position of the cursor in the text to achieve this.
There is no setting to change this. These seem to be bugs in setting the focus correctly.

Something doesn't work? - Keeping an eye on the status bar can save you a lot of time!

Re: Problems with the Text Tool
Interesting....I never knew it was a bug. I thought that's just the way Inkscape works for text -- first type the text, then change to the font and size that you want.
Usually I just type a couple of letters, then change font/size, then finish typing. But that's because when I"m using the Text tool, I'm usually writing tutorials, which means, a LOT of text. If I just need a little bit of text, I type it all out, and then change font/size.

Re: Problems with the Text Tool
Thanks.
Works OK if I do things in that order.
