.ai problem
.ai problem
I'm using Inkscape 0.91 64-bit under Windows 8.1 on a machine with 16 GB RAM. I understood that the program should be able to open .ai (Illustrator) files, but this does not seem to work for me. I have tried both an .ai file exported from Coral Draw and also a sample .ai file downloaded from the web. Coral Draw opens both of them without problems. But with Inkscape, after going through the convert dialogue, a blank sheet appears, though with the title of the file. On closing, the normal "Do you want to save" routine follows. I get the same blank sheet with title if I try and open the files in Acrobat, LibreOffice, or IrfanView -- i.e. only Coral Draw opens these .ai files as it should. (Changing the extension to .pdf, as some have recommended, does not help.) Can anyone advise on how to get Inkscape to open the files?
Re: .ai problem
I can't help you, but maybe it will help others who can, if you attach the .ai end converted Inkscape files? (Usually that's what they ask )

Re: .ai problem
I have successfully opened an .ai file by right clicking the .ai file - Properties - Open with - Inkscape.
Depending on the Illustrator version this might work.

Re: .ai problem
Thanks for your comments. I'm afraid I can't post the file because "The extension ai is not allowed" . As I said, one of the two files is a sample from the web, and it opens fine in Corel Draw as explained above, but in Inkscape there's just a blank sheet (although with the correct title above it!). I'm afraid the Right Click - Properties - Open With route does not offer Inkscape amongst the options.
Re: .ai problem
Hi.
You can zip the file and attach on each of the forum's boards if it is below the size limit.
The main problems of opening the file in its fullness could be it is using cmyk profile, or using special blending modes, or using gradient meshes.
Just guessing.

Re: .ai problem
Thanks for that. I've just tried converting the smaller sample file to RGB, but that doesn't work. I'll have a go at zipping the file and seeing if it uploads that way.

Re: .ai problem
By opening the file with a notepad it seems to have an embedded raster image only in the file and a thumbnail image, and %%DocumentProcessColors are cmyk.
I have some doubts it could work; would suggest to try exporting svg from coreldraw.

Re: .ai problem
That's fascinating! It opens in Corel as "sample.cdr". If I then save it to .svg, the result opens in Inkscape without problem. But all the problems with the original "sample.ai" remain. Out of curiosity I have just downloaded another free native .ai file from the web, and that opens in Inkscape without trouble. So there must be something about this one file that caused the trouble. As for the original very much larger .cdr file that started all this when I wanted to export in as .ai to see if that gave better results than exporting as .svg, I think I'll make do with what I've got rather than spend more time on that -- as I shan't be needed to convert from Corel again. Thanks for your help.
