I just got done revising a bunch of labels with tables in them. I had time figuring out how to do a table for Inkscape. MS Word and Excel tables did not work because the borders came in as rectangles. I tried Open Office Writer and it worked like a charm with no problems from the borders.
Here's the method I used:
Create the table in Open Office Writer
Select the whole table
Export the selection to pdf (make sure to click 'selection' in the options)
Drag the pdf into Inkscape page
If any problems with the table, ungroup the members, and make sure it is on the top layer.
