I want to create a guideline that runs along the bottom of an object I already have, so that I can delete the object. How can I do this? The Web has not been useful thus far.

Select the object and press Shift+G.
Then delete unnecessary guide lines.
Way to do that:
grab them and move them out of the screen, or
hover over them until they are marked with red for a second, and press delete.
