frequent crashes on windows 7 PC

Postby Womble » Thu Aug 16, 2012 11:38 pm

does anyone know if there is a problem with the latest supposedly stable version of inkscape v0.48.2-1 and window 7?

I am having the program hang up and give me a message no disk in the hard drive, this message cannot be closed except vie the task manager.

Once this message comes up it re appears with ever instance of trying to open Inkscape.

the only solution is to completely uninstall Inkscape then reinstall it.

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

Ah yes, sometimes it does seem that "stable" is a bit idealistic, when it comes to Inkscape. Have you noticed, when the hang up occurs, what you are doing? Is it only in large files? Or files with a large number of nodes or gradients, or has any filters in use? That could indicate the file is challenging your system's RAM, and a common cause of hang or even crashes in systems with less than 2 gb RAM.

For hanging, it could happen with any kind of system, if you've asked Inkscape to do something that takes a little time. Opening a large file (over 1 or 2 mb) can sometimes take a minute. I've used the Spirograph extension quite a bit, and if the settings you've input defines a spirogram with 1000 nodes, it can take a moment to draw. Or using Trace Bitmap with multiple color scans, on a photo can take a minute or 2 to draw. Or there are several other situations where it might take Inkscape a minute or 2 to finish the task.

But the "no disk in hard drive" message, I'm not sure if I've heard of that with Inkscape. And I'm not really sure what it means (how can a hard drive not have a disk?). Are you sure that the error message is coming from Inkscape? Could it be coming from Windows? If you're opening an especially large file, I guess it could cause the computer to think it needs more resources.....?? Yeah, I'm not sure about that error message. Maybe someone else will know?

Hello,
Thank you for your pointers.
The hang up happens when opening a new blank document so node overload or intense processing can probably be discounted as a cause.
After much head scratching I re-loaded inkscape using the 64 bit version and last night this seemed to be holding up.
Will see what today brings but honestly I am not holding my breath that this is over.
Will post again if more problems.
The message of 'no disc in hard drive' definately comes from Inkscape and not Windows.
All my other applications work as normal and I only get this message when using Inkscape even if that is the only application running.
Take care

Hhmmmm.....well it probably wouldn't hurt to hold your breath. That's because there's not a 64-bit version of Inkscape, at least not a stable one....that I know of. I did hear that someone was working on it, but it doesn't even have a "ball park" release date, that I've heard of. So I'm not sure what you installed?? Perhaps there is a 64-bit version for Linux and/or Mac....mmmmm....I'm pretty sure not for any os, but if any, it would be for LInux. But not for Windows, unless it was just released in the last week or 2.

Well, I've looked at Sourceforge and don't find any. Although a dev version might not be at Sourceforge. Or did you mean you installed it on a 64-bit version of Windows?

If you had originally installed an incompatible version, that would certainly explain these strange errors, hangs and crashes.

Well, let us know how it goes :D

Now it sounds intriguing... how do you know that "no disk in hard drive" is coming from Inkscape and not from Windows? It is a quite common (unwanted) Windows message. Since that message has to contain some more text, use it as a pointer and Uncle Google or Auntie Bing would be pleased to offer you plenty of solutions. Most probably some system files are corrupted or missing.

Thank you for your ongoing interest.
The problem has been found and fixed.
A few days ago I was using scanned images which were on a memory stick.
Inkscape then put a file in a random place causing it to assume that all files for Inkscape were on the memory stick and it kept looking for the memory stick hence the message 'no disc in the hard drive'.
Someone told hubby to look for a file called recently-used.xbel and delete it.
Did that and it fixed the problem immediately.
Many thanks for your kindness and support.
