New Computer Time. I Need Advice.
Is 4 Gig enough for Inkscape, or should I layout the dow for the 6 Gig? Inkscape does use the graphic card right? Can it take advantage of quad core? I'm probably goi to get a quad core anyway just wondering.

Re: New Computer Time Advice?
No Inkscape isn't multithreaded yet so it can't use more processor cores and it doesn't use graphic card, but it was discussed on the dev list and it will probably be implemented eventually (not in 0.47, the code is being refactored for the 0.47 so it will be easier later to multithread it). For now Inkscape is heavy on CPU.
The memory depends on how big your drawings are (how many objects or nodes), I have 2 GB and most of the time it's more than enough (I also have other applications open when using Inkscape). I did need more when I was working on files with over 50000 nodes though.

Well I'm on a lap top with 2 Gig now and it's never enough Could partly be Vista's fault. Start seeing a real slow down with 4 blur paths or a lot of nodes.
Re: New Computer Time Advice?
lolol yes, I'm on linux, but for Vista you need 2 GB for normal work, I'd recommend more for Inkscape then.

Re: New Computer Time Advice?
I'm on 3 gig Vista and it gets slow at times. Speed is one of the major things about Inkscape. Still, it's on its way!
Re: New Computer Time Advice?
Remember, if you're going above 3GB you MUST get a 64bit Operating system if you want your OS to be able to use it all.
I run Vista with 2GB of RAM and I don't know that I really need more for Inkscape. But then, my drawings aren't nearly as complicated as some.
If you're going to go Vista 64, I highly recommend you stay away from NVidia hardware--their drivers aren't mature enough still. I have both an NVidia motherboard and 2 NVidia video cards. Only a few weeks ago was a driver released that allowed me to play Audio CD's in a SATA DVD drive. And I get constant blue screens with some games which I know is because of the video cards.

Re: New Computer Time Advice?
I'm a Costco addict and there doesn't seem to be a group for that. So the first two computers I'm looking at are. They are both 64 bit:
GateWay
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz
6GB RAM
Price $1199 with out monitor $1399 with the 24" shinny monitor is $100 off right now.

HP

Price: $1099 with the 24" monitor.
Note: that pdf crashed FireFox sometimes. Other times it doesn't.
I'd definitely have to replace the graphics card on the HP..
Me looking at the 24" monitors *****drools****** "I like shinney." The colors on the gateway looked a little better, but you never know what they have them set on in the store. I had a bad experience with Gateway back in the late 90s. The first computer I ever bought was from Gateway. It was never stable. No matter how many times I update the drivers and firmware, etc. I heard after I got ride of it, the problem was probably low voltage from the power supply at high loads. Now that all the computers are farmed out to subcontractors in China it probably doesn't make as much difference what manufacture you buy from.
Back when I used to game... I remember Nvidia was slow with updating their drivers then too.
Someone told me to wait for Windows 7 to come out. But I can't see waiting on a Windows release. Aside from "in theory" the hardware should still be compatible... ***crossing finger**** MS never seem to roll out OS's on time.
