Bevel Gears

Postby parkham » Tue Aug 21, 2018 11:04 pm

Hello. I attempted searching here and on the Internet for designing beveled gears with Inkscape, but came up short. I may have poor search skills.

Is it possible to make bevel gears in Inkscape?

Thank you.

Probably others know what that is - but could you share an image of it, so that those who don't get an idea what beveled gears are?

My immediate thought was of gears with angled teeth designed for joining two shafts at an angle (typically 90°). Wikipedia has an article with more details: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bevel_gear

The best answer for the OP, therefore, is to point out that Inkscape is a 2D drawing package, not 3D. It's also not a CAD program, despite having some CAD-like qualities and features. If you want to design a bevel gear in full 3D then Inkscape is not the program for you. If you want to draw a flat representation of a bevel gear - as an orthographic projection, for example - then Inkscape could do the job, but I still think you'd be better off with a proper CAD program.

If, however, you want to draw a 2D gear with a bevelled appearance, then Lazur's post is probably along the right lines.

Inkscape has a couple of extensions for drawing gears. Extensions menu > Render > Gears.

Also there's an LPE (live path effect). As far as I can tell, it can draw more than one interconnected gear - I mean with the teeth meshed together.

And for a simplistic type of gear, you can configure the Star tool to draw something close.

But clarity about "bevel gear" will allow us to give a better answer.

No doubt about: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=bevel+gear&t= ... &ia=images
Not sure about the view angle.

Cheers
