Recall last positions of windows and subwindows

Postby Inkscaper_ » Fri Aug 01, 2008 6:54 am

I'm not sure if it's a problem with Inkscape or my window manager, but every time I open new Inkscape subwindow (like fill & stroke or layers) it shows in center of my screen instead of position where it was used last time. I tried different settings in "Inkscape Preferences > Windows" dialog, but this hasn't helped. I don't have this problem with Gimp under the same wm (xfwm4). So is it a "feature" implemented in Inkscape, or should I just change my window manager?

Are you using 0.45 or 0.46? 0.46 now docks those windows by default but perhaps you're intentionally not using that option?

I know that the position of palettes in Inkscape frustrates me also. I have multiple monitors and the document properties palette opens up slightly too high on my screen so I can't move it without dragging the window borders to reveal the titlebar on the next monitor. I also get frustrated that if I have multiple docked palettes open and I close and re-open them they don't remember their arrangement and sizes.

I think Inkscape is heading in the right direction, but still has a lot of work to do in this area.

Oh, and I think the main windows position is saved in the document template. So if you change your window, edit the document slightly then save over the template it should remember. There are also setting in Inkscape Preferences that will allow you to control the the size and position of the main window.

Yes, I'm intentionally not using docked windows as they take too much screen space. I figured out that my window manager will remember Inkscape subwindows positions if they were closed using "X" buttons on the top right corners, but will ignore previous alignment if it they closed using "Close" button (File -> Inkscape preferences -> Windows -> Show close button). But even when closing windows with "X" buttons, all windows positions are lost after restarting Inkscape.

I tried to get around this with Devil's Pie, but it couses ugly flickers, and I don't want to have epileptic attack every time I have to open new window
