[solved] How to use my Inkscape images in Word?

Postby Prospero88 » Wed Aug 20, 2008 2:10 am

Hello,

I have a new problem and so a new question! :)

I'm doing a work in Word and, moreover the text, I need images on the pages. I had to use victorial images because these images consists in fonts, but hugely enlarged, so I used Inkscape to inlarge the letters of the different fonts, and it's worked, no problem! :) :)

But, I can't use the .svg images in Word, so I exported in Bitmap format proposed by Inkscape, the .png format. (I didn't know it before).
And, surprisingly, the same image transformed in .png has not the same quality as in its .svg original format! :?
But may be, this is normal!!??

So, help me please! Could you tell me if it exists a means to keep the perfect quality of my .svg creation (In Inkscape)in Word? :?:
Or, if it really totally impossible- why not!-, do you know another wordprocessing software, may be an open source one, that I coul use to take advantage of my Inkscape images?

Thanks in advance for that so important question for me! :)

If your using a nightly snapshot you can copy from inkscape and paste into word fairly reliably.
Or you can save as EMF and import that.

To continue on Simarilius's suggestion, note that not all features of SVG will convert nicely to EMF. The only way to get a "perfect" quality is to save as a PNG, but a PNG is not vector so you need to make sure you save the PNG at a size suitable for your medium.

Off topic:
I really need to create a sticky post explaining image resolution :)

Thank you both for your answers! :)
So, I have 2 problems! :
What is a nightly snapshot! :?
And secondly, MicroUgly, you say "a "perfect" quality is to save as a PNG, but a PNG is not vector so you need to make sure you save the PNG at a size suitable for your medium." and, just, is that I did, I saved the .png at the suitable size and so I've not changed the size, but in spite of it, the quality of the .png is absolutely not the same as the .svg! The .svg is simply perfect, but in the .png, one can see the "pixellized blur" on the outlines! Is it normal?

Actually, I imagine there are many people who use vectorial images inserted in a page with text, so do you know how do these people to have a perfect vectorial image, the same as they create in Inkscape? They use Word or another software? And have you heard of Word posing problems to use vectorial images?

Sorry for all that questions! Thank in advance if you can answer! ;)
Read you later!

Nightly snapshots are the daily compiled builds of the current development inkscape.
You can download them from the site linked from the main inkscape page, be warned though, they come with no guarantee of
stability, as its the current state of development which can be in some flux.

With regards to the 'perfect' version issue, thats only a problem with EMF if your using more advanced features such as blur & other filters.
For more simple stuff EMF should be adequate and not loose anything.

That's a sign that you have not saved the image at a suitable size and to go into it further is why I need to create a sticky about "resolution" :)

But Simarilius is right, it's only if you are using more advanced feature do you need to worry about loss of detail when saving as an EMF. If you save as EMF and you can't see any difference to the orginal SVG then you are good to go.

Ok, so saving as an EMF should be the right solution!
So, my last question is : how to save as an EMF? 8-) Because, in the pulldown menu Save as..., I have .wmf format as a Metafile format, but not .emf!
Is it a bug of my installation?? Or there is a special means with the keyboard?
Thanks in advance for your answer! :)

I assume you're using Windows since you're trying to put an image into Word. I also assume you're running Inkscape 0.46. I have the option to save as EMF on Windows so I'm not sure why you wouldn't. You might like to take a look at How do I open/save this filetype? to identify any problems.

Thanks Simarilius and MicroUgly!

My problem is resolved! :)

I tried with saving as an WMF and the result is very good : the quality of this .wmf inside a Word page is perfect, exactly the same as the .svg original in Inkscape. The image is a slightly lengthened in width once insered in Word, I don't know why, but I can correct that without losing in terms of quality!

Besides, yes MicroUgly, I run in Windows Xp and I have the 0.46 version of Inkscape, and to know more about the absence of .emf I went to see at "How do I open/save this filetype?" topic, as you advised me, but, as for my computer, if I go to Application Data file, Inkscape is not there! So I can't check it! If you know how to add the .emf saving possibility in my Inkscape, I'II take it! ;)

Anyway, a great thanks for you both! :) :)
