Filling figures

Postby Karolis » Mon Apr 09, 2018 2:14 am

Hello,

recently I've installed Inkscape. My aim is to make micropatterns for my final thesis and evalute cell behavior on those micropatterns. The reason I need inkscape is to create an initial vector which can be understood by AFM device. This device does not process whole figures so I've decided to fill figures with smaller and dense patterns. I would like to ask this: how can I fill a square with such shapes without doing it manually? Otherwise it's really hard to get stable quality.

Can you post a picture of what you want to achieve?
I don't think I understand what a 'micropattern' is, also I have no idea what you mean by 'whole figures', so any solution may fall short in regards to your requirements.

AFM - atomic force microscopy ??

I have an idea what you might be asking. But not sure enough to venture an answer.

I'm guessing "whole figures" means the device only takes a small part of the image you feed it.

Try applying these to a rectangle and see if that's something you need:

Extensions > Generate from Path > Voronoi pattern...

Filters > Distort > Pixel Smear
Filters > Distort > Swirl
Filters > Image Effects > Film Grain
Filters > Materials > any?
Filters > Textures > any?

Does any of these come close to what you need?

Yes, I'm going to make a micropattern for atomic force microscopy.
By saying that software does not process whole figures I mean that if you completely fill figure the won't process it. But if you that figure with small patterns it can process it and eventually make a "filled" figure.

I still don't understand what you need to draw. Is it to recreate above image in an SVG document? It's very easy to create lines and rectangles in Inkscape.

Or do you need to fill an object with some sort of a pattern? Maybe we're not thinking of the same "pattern" definition?

Or do you need to have an object like above, a cross or a hexagonal structure and make it repeat, maybe even seamlessly?

Take a look at tiling:

Does a 'micropattern' describe the trajectory of the 'reading head' of an atomic force microscope? Like the spiral grooves in a long-playing record? (or the data tracks on more modern DVDs?)

Inkscape has pattern fills, which are relatively easy to apply. But I would guess that the stock patterns won't suit your needs. You can create your own patterns, except that your original message indicates that you don't want to draw them. And plus, the patterns themselves are not vector objects....or, well....at least they don't have nodes, so it sounds like they would not work.

(Except for the Voronoi extension) I can't think of any way to create a unique pattern, without drawing it yourself.

Maybe tiled clones, and then convert the clones back to paths? (prkos gave link to manual info on tiled clones)

Yes, it describes the device's writing trajectory. I need to fill that square with cranks. Here I attach the image of what I need to do. Note, that the figure in the picture is filled with separate hand-drawn cranks. I want all those cranks to be one and look smooth.

Aha! Use the area fill for the gcode tools for it:
