abilty to set the defaults within inkscape itself

ive been reading where you can adjust some defaults for inkscape but almost need to be a programmer to do it thanks

Which defaults exactly do you have in mind? There is File>Preferences dialog for app's defaults. And you can use File>Documents Properties to change document's setting and save as template for later use. Please be more specific.
