Any way to add a new tool to the toolbar or command bar? It would be nice to have an extension with its own button.

That is what I see too, I was hoping there was a way to fudge it until then. looks like there is a lot of work to do before it can be released.

If you write C++, then you can do anything (and would need to contact the developers about help with it, via devel mailing list or IRC developer channel)
(but tool bars are going to change a lot in 0.93, so you won't be able to take that code with you to the next version).

I have done this, I've added a simple tool that when I click, it just types some text onto the image where I click. It took me about a week to figure out all the places in the code I needed to add stuff. If you really need it, I can help you, but it sounds like .93 will make this easier....
