Sozi with Inkscape

Postby Inkspots » Thu Jan 10, 2013 7:42 am

I recently installed inkscape 0.48.4.r from trunk.
I'm on a linux system using Cinnamon desktop manager.
When I installed The new build of Inkscape, apt removed my sozi.
I dont know why, but now I cant install Sozi and I'd like to have it for building tutorials.
Is there a work around for this, or is the new Inkscape Incompatible with Sozi now?

HI Pilosopong Tasyo,
Yes I know how to get the files.
( I have a copy of the files already as a matter of fact.)
Normally I use the Sozi ppa, no problem.
What I'm asking is..
1. Why did apt (synaptic) remove it in the first place?
2. why doesn't it want me to re-install ?
When I try to re-install Sozi synaptic warns that I cant, because Inkscape isnt installed.
Rolling back, from Inkscape-trunk ( 0.48.4 r), to Inkscape ( 0.48.3.1) would solve the problem, but I love the new, faster and more efficient build.

Is it just the disparity between the package name " inkscape-trunk" and "inkscape"
or is there an incompatibility between the Sozi code, and the new build of Inkscape.
I dont want to add the files back manually if thats going to break something.
As a side-note, I was surprised to see the different package name.

Pilosopong Tasyo ,
Thank you for taking the time to investigate these questions so thoroughly.
I replaced the Sozi files in their original location. After reassigning appropriate permissions to each file, Sozi once again
appeared in the extensions menu. So far everything seems to be working fine.
:)

I suspect the only problem was in the package name that didn't satisfy the depends for Sozi installation.

The problem with the playback of your Sozi file,
was in the way that firefox handles SVG, rather than in Sozi.
JessyInks' transitions etc seem mostly to be controlled by java, which most browsers handle very well.
Sozi's transitions merely take advantage of the nature of svg itself, so some browsers can have trouble with them.
Try playing the same Sozi presentation in opera, Chrome...and Internet explorer, and you'll see what I mean.

My Sozi presentations always seem to play back just fine, but I have occasionally had them jump, pause,
etc, in previous versions of Firefox. I haven't tested one in Ie for quite a while, but IE isn't famous for handling svg well.

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I've never tried to do much with Jessy Ink.

I think both JessyInk, and Sozi are fine extensions, and serve their intended purpose.. its just a matter of what your most comfortable using.
I really doubt That Sozi has any impressive "features" that you wont find a parallel for in JessyInk.

What I like about Sozi:
I like that Sozi presentation files don't need to be arranged in layers, and simple
transitions can be easily achieved with placement , and orientation of your frame object in the Sozi poster.
I can add animations if I want to...and sound( adding sound is theoretical at this point I haven't tried it yet).
But I don't need to use Java unless I choose to. Just as with JessyInk svgs, no special software is needed for playback,
an svg capable browser is all you need. I can auto-advance my presentation frames, or let the viewer advance them.
..and most importantly, I have fun playing with my Sozi presentations.

Libreoffice impress actually does nice presentations to. Sharing and playing them back on an unfamiliar computer
can occasionally be an issue though. Also, it doesnt allow me to draw my presentation graphics, and set up the presentation at the same time.

Since I'm unfamiliar with JessyInk, and havent tried it for quite a long time, can you tell me, what you like best about it?

Rotate and zoom in JessyInk arent new, and your right, Impress is a presentation heavyweight, while the plugins in Inkscape are more quick and easy lightweights.
...but I love being able to draw my graphics as I set up the presentation, and the simpler architecture of Sozi presentations appeals to me.
I used to do these for product presentations, though I have no need to make those these days. They are still very nice for creating tutorials
and project instructions that catch the users attention, and make the lesson fun.
