[solved] "Dynamic" o "floating" clipping.

Postby yozzarian » Sun Sep 11, 2016 8:23 am

Sorry, I don't even know how to call this.

I have been given a Inkscape file with a map clipped in a rectangular area: only the part of the map inside the rectangle is visible. The thing is that you can move the map around with the pointer and new parts come in and out of the rectangle, in very much the same way that embedded Google maps do in their windows. How can I do it? I can't find anything in the menus, I can't get Google to tell me, and I have even been inspecting the XML code to try and reproduce it, but no dice.

Any ideas? please? Thank you.

Hi.

Group the image, clip the group.
Once clip set, enter the group and move the raster image inside the group.

Or if you want to make it the other way around, make a white/undefined filled rectangle, group it, clone the group and use the cloned group to mask the raster image -change the position of the displayed area by moving the rectangle inside the parent group.

Or convert the raster image into a pattern fill.

Well google does load the whole map from smaller parts and not just clips a larger one. What you are after won't improve the performance of inkscape on your file. Still the same amount of data is handled +the clipping/cloning/masking/pattern is stored in the def section.

Off topic:
Lazur, the idea with the mask sparked the silly idea of making a 'search game' svg...

I mean those with a flashlight, when you move it, you shine light on different areas of an image, to find some hidden object. Unfortunately, with all that grouping, I couldn't make the clone and the torch stay in line - the groups all move a bit different, probably I scaled at some point... Ideally, moving the torch would move the light beam and the mask... I'm not sure if that's possible at all, because of nesting of the groups. Probably better using blend modes... or a simple group with an object with a hole in it.

The torch concept reminds me this page.
(Remember it was linked in the forum somewhere.)

Your instructions did it. Thank you.
