[solved] Keeping cool Bezier curve creations??

Postby Lane Rae » Wed Jul 13, 2016 12:23 am

When you create a Bezier creation and move a node sometimes it goes all whacky and creates some neat things. How do you keep them??
Every time I move it it changes no matter if it is a duplicate, the file is closed and reopened or what I do I can't keep those cool creations.
Is this just impossible or is there a trick to it?

Thanks!

It sounds to me like you're creating Spiro paths, rather than "normal" Beziers. There's a "Mode" option on the toolbar when the Bezier tool is selected which lets you switch between different modes - Spiro is the second one.

The maths behind the Spiro algorithm can lead to complex and chaotic results, but they're the result of the algorithm teetering on the edge of stability. If you move or tweak something even slightly, the algorithm can quickly move to a more stable result and the chaotic shape is lost.

You can convert Spiro paths into normal Beziers using the Path > Object to Path menu item. Do that, and you'll have a stable shape that you can move around and tweak - but it will also gain many more nodes, so won't be so easy to edit smoothly.

If that was the case, overblown spiro-paths, you can also put them in a group (Ctrl+G) and move the group instead around, not the path.

Your description may also refer to your precison settings too low and therefore distorting the paths every once in a while.
Or it could be using the tweak tool to modify the path, which also simplifies the shape in unwanted ways too.
