Copy and paste turns object into image
Copy and paste turns object into image
I have an object in inkscape that I want to copy and paste back into inkscape so there are two of them. When I do this, the 2nd object is actually an image, it's not really a copy of the first. How do I create a real copy. Attached is the file I tried this with.

Re: Copy and paste turns object into image
Did you try to paste it with Ctrl+Alt+V? Without accidentally pressing Alt+B instead?
If not, then I can think only of the known bug with osx's clipboard that produced such result.
The issue is related to the program and the system you running it.
Others opening your svg with inkscape on a different system, won't see the described problem.
By the way creating a duplicant (Ctrl+D) is more handy than copying and pasting back the object for such purpose.

Hi.
Try this workaround: Copy something else, and then copy the intended object again before pasting.
You might bump into a well known bug:

I'm using a Mac. I only tried ctrl+C then ctrl+V. I also did it from the menus. I didn't know about ctrl+D, I'll have to try that.

I tried ctrl+D and that works.

Since you are using Inkscape on a Mac, I would recommend to read this Inkscape FAQ: … and/or various earlier topics here in the forum, e.g. 'Re: Mac Snow Leopard?'.
Some additional details are mentioned in 'Copy/Paste in MacOS with X11 - question on known bug'.
For new Inkscape users on a Mac, this page has a couple of useful quick tips:
