You can search for info here or post new questions and comments at my problem is that the drawing window and save as dialog too large. the whole window does not shrink to fit. I have a 15inch monitor and my resolution is at 1024*768. This seems to be the only program that is having the problem. I have tried to uninstall and re-install with no sucess. the only anoying solution is to auto hide my top and bottom panels so I can see more of the desktop. Am I missing a simple solution?

Try a recent prerelease version of 0.47 - many window size issues have been fixed and Inkscape should behave better on small screens. The size of the 'Save as' dialog seems an upstream GTK+ issue of the GtkFileChooser which AFAICS has already improved a lot since the release of 0.46 (at least on OS X ;-).

OTOH the release of 0.47 is imminent - after that I am sure there will be soon new packages for many linux distributions available.
