Anyone come up with a good method of arching text?

eg, text with this shape:

OK - the shape got crunched when I posted - let's try an image...

Try Text > Put on Path for each line separately

Nah - not on a path - that's what I call an "arc". Let's try one more image:


This was made by:
Create/Size Text.
Convert to Path.
Path Effect->Bend
Convert to Path.
Draw a container (lines - 4 points) that follows the angles of the outermost letters.
Flip the container vertically.
Select the text and the container.
Effects->Render->Perspective.

So I guess I answered my own question, but the results are a little off. Is there an easier way?

Now I get what you want to achieve, the leftmost and rightmost vertical must be unchanged.

You can do it with Pattern along Path from the Effects menu (not from the Path Effects) Effects > Generate from Path > Pattern along Path

There you can choose the option Ribbon that will give you the result you want http://www.inkscape.org/screenshots/gal ... ngpath.png

You might have some luck with Pushing in Tweak tool or Node sculpting too

Being new to this forum, I am assuming that a lot has changed since this topic was started in 2008.

Can someone help walk a newb through the process of creating a vertical arc text?

Please remember that I am not only new to the forum, but I am also new to Inkscape... in other words, dumb it down for this guy. Looking forward to hearing how to do this!

The solution is Bezier Envelope extension.

As of 2017, here is the link for the extension:

In Ubuntu, Copy files to /usr/share/Inkscape/extensions
(in the terminal type 'sudo nautilus' or 'sudo caja' or whatever your default file browser is)

Make a rectangle, convert 'Object to path', select all nodes and 'Make selected segments curves' then drag and bend too desired shape.

Create text, select it and then do the following while it is selected: 'Object to path', 'ungroup', 'combine'

Then select the text, hold the shift key, select the box, then go to
Extensions
Modify Path
Bezier Envelope

BING! You're done.

I've spent hours trying to do this very simple thing until I found that extension.

Well, I have no idea what the last poster's message wasn't answered. Probably would have had better luck if he started a new topic for his request. I'm lucky to remember yesterday!

Is there a version for .92? I had downloaded this from a few different places and it just doesn't work at all. Wondering if it matters that I installed Inkscape into the Pgm Folder x86 but using a 64 bit pc....

I'd check preferences to see where the extensions are targeted. Inkscape might be looking in the wrong place.

I'd also check the contents of the files - many people download html pages that display the file contents, instead of the actual .py and .inx files.

No, it doesn't matter where you installed Inkscape. You should put all the .py and .inx files here: C:/username/AppData/Roaming/Inkscape/extensions

If there's not an extensions folder there, you can make one. If the extension you download comes in a zip file, you need to unzip it, and put the .py and .inx files in that folder above.

By putting them in that folder, the extension will be availabe even if you upgrade Inkscape. If you put it in the program folder (where you installed Inkscape) you'll have to re-install the extension when you upgrade Inkscape.

I found that the env deformation is actually now included in the Path Effects Menu in .92! yay. I had been searching in the Extensions menu, so it never dawned on me to look in path effects, found it by accident.
Brynn, thx for telling me about the AppData/Roaming. I also learned from your note to put my default templates in that folder too. yay.
So CR33dog, give that a shot, i suggest you duplicate your text first, I hide mine on a layer, out of sight, just so I have a duplicate if things go awry), then convert your text to a path, (path, objects to path), (have your text selected), then go to Path, then Path Effects, Env deformation and play around.
