building a library

Postby Espermaschine » Mon Dec 08, 2014 2:13 pm

so when you have a style of your own and certain elements appear in your work over and over again
does it make sense to build a library ?

do any of you people do this ?

like, for example: sunbursts
you could build a new one for each new piece you do or have a few saved on your hd
i mean, its the beauty of vectorgraphics (and tiled cloning), you can scale it any way you want and edit it further to your liking

same with hatchings or symbols like radioactivity symbols, etc.

Re: building a library

Well, I just save countless SVG files  I think there is a way to build a library -- like a symbols library, is what I've heard of. But I haven't a clue how to do that. If I were to guess, it would be a file in the inkscape dir.

Somewhere though.....it's been a while ago.....I saw a tutorial. I didn't read it closely, because I got lost early on.... OH!! I think it was Syllie at Very Simple Designs. Let me find that link. Here's he site, and the tutorial was on it. http://verysimpledesigns.com/ I think it tells how to build a library. I'll try to find the tutorial link.....brb :D

Edit
Hhmm, it seems I was scared off by the word "library". Now that I read a whole tutorial (most of them talk about libraries, but I was looking at this one: http://verysimpledesigns.com/vectors/in ... rders.html Anyway, she refers to SVG files which contain many different patterns, a library file!

(So I've been doing it all along, except most of the time, there's just a couple of images in each file  )

I still think there's a way to have a library though, that's not just an SVG file. But I would have to do some research, to try to figure it out. Maybe someone else can give us some info.

Edit #2
In the soon to be released, new stable version 0.91, there is a Symbols dialog, and new functionality (I guess) that goes with it. The release notes probably has more info (that I skipped over when I read it) http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php ... notes/0.91 I don't know if that will be helpful for you or not?
