Using Object to Path in Text

Postby danb49337 » Sat Feb 04, 2012 3:26 am

I'm trying to follow a tutorial at: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... eLogo.html

The tutorial says: The text, stored as a text object, needs to be converted to a path object for editing. This process is not reversible and the text will lose its memory of being text. To convert the text to a path, select the text with the Select Tool and use the Path → icon Object to Path (Shift+Ctrl+C) command. Each letter is converted into a separate path and all the paths are placed in a Group (when objects are in a Group they can be manipulated as if they were one object). This is normally a good thing, but for our purposes it would be better if all the letters were not grouped and were composed of one path. So, with the text selected, use the Object → icon Ungroup (Shift+Ctrl+G) command to remove the group and then Path → icon Combine (Ctrl+K) to combine the paths.

When it gets to converting the text to a path, things quit working the way that they should. I add my text, then select it. The status bar says TEXT (New time roman 144 px) in Layer 1. When I go to Path - Object to Path or ( ctr-shft-C) the status bar says Group of 4 objects in Layer Layer 1.

I never can get to the Nodes.

When I tried this several day ago it worked as advertised, but I had to stop that day. Then next time that I tried it nothinbg worked.

Welcome to the forum!

It seems you only read half of the quote you posted from the tutorial. Start reading now the 4th sentence starting with "Each letter..." You have 2 more steps to complete.

Are you sure that you want your email address showing as your username? This is generally not a good idea, because your inbox will fill up with spam!

Thank you brynn. I do have a bad habit of glossing over too many things.

Oh gosh, it looks like this forum software doesn't allow you to change a username. I didn't realize that. If this problem has been solved, I could delete this topic, and that will take the email address off the forum. Then you could re-register with a new name. I'm sorry to put you through that, but I think you'd prefer it to the alternative (uncontrollable spam). Let me know if that's what you want to do :D

Edit
Oh dear, it actually might not be that easy. I'll have to get with the forum administrator, because we would have to delete your account to allow you to register again. And he may prefer to just change your name himself. I'll let you know what I learn. Is that the name you want -- "danb49337"?
