[solved] White lines around trace of bitmap.

Postby Uzuri » Fri Jan 11, 2008 3:47 am

Hi all. I'm new to Inkscape and this is probably dead easy, but it's beyond me :)

I have a transparent png (high quality, no compression), that I tosses into Inkscape to vectorize. I used the multiple scans, by color to do this.

I get a generally nice vectorization, but the trouble is that there is a thin white line all around the edges of the drawing. This is problematic because the drawing will be layered over a colored background and the white line will almost certainly show.

Any suggestions for getting rid of it? I've tried dropping the number of scans, but it loses some of my other colors before it drops the white.

could you attach a screenshot? Maybe it's the antialiasing problem, Inkscape blurs the edges of objects to make them smooth and look good.

They're kind of hard to see in a screenshot, but here's the resultant picture: http://www.theredsetter.com/test/temp.png (I did put it in photoshop to layer in the black BG for emphasis, but it looks very much the same in InkScape)

I'm guessing it's choking on the alpa information in the image that it's tracing?

something along those lines yes, it's not antialiasing, it is the bottom path that took the color of the background, it can happen depending on the options you chose for trace, I don't think it's a malfunction.

Its easy to remove, I think it will be the path at the bottom so just select it and delete, to select the bottom most path hold Alt while clicking and look at the bottom left to see what color object is chosen. When you get to white (or something like that) just delete.

Sounds easy enough :) Thanks much.

I'll have a shot at it over lunch and let you know if it worked.

Can somebody help me? If I bring any photo to inkscape so it adds these very thin edges to the picture. Have anyone noticed? I've tried many things but every time it ads these thin edges all around picture. Try add some dark picture and zoom as much as you can at the corner. You will see these borders. How I can remove these thin edges? I can't vectorize anything because there is always these edges.

Can you share an example, @tracer?

There is example.

This happens every time when I add image. I wanted to create endless pictures and vectorize.

Guess that's what you get when you render the image in smooth and not blocky mode. Probably that rendering issue is unrelated to any following bitmap tracing.
However there is no guarantee that an automatic trace will come out with the exact same borders as the original raster image and having no "artifacts". Need to run some tests.
