Hello,
I have to say i'm new here and also don't work that long with Inkscape yet.
I'm searching already half a day how i can used tiled clones as this would be the best option to do what i want.
I made a circle first, than i drew a small block. I want several blocks around the circle following the line of the circle.
I line up the centerpoints from the circle and from the block. But every time i try to create clones they appear completely somewhere else!
I need maybe 40 small blocks around a circle. But to try i started with 4 blocks. Even that i can't fix.
I tried different settings: In shift, Per row, shift X, -100 and per colum, shift Y,-100. And at Rotation: Angle, Per colom, 90degr.
And Row, colums: 1*4.
Could anyone please explain what I'm doing wrong?
Thank you!
Kind Regards,
Jurgen.
Tiled clones
Re: Tiled clones
The option of creating tiled clones is nice, but for many of my tasks I haven't found out either how
to get it to work. And in some cases I think it's simply not possible. I'm not sure whether it is
possible at all to do some rotation symmetric tiled clones. Please, correct me if I am wrong. I would also be interested in how to do it.
If you nevertheless want to use clones, I would do the following:
1. Draw your object and place it on the circumference of your circle
2. *Reposition the rotation center of your object to the center of your circle
3. Create a clone (Alt+D)
4. Transform (Shift+Ctrl+M), Rotate the clone by your desired angle
5. Create other clones (maybe from the original object, if you don't want to generate clones of clones of clones of clones ... (Maybe, somebody can tell me if there are disadvantages if you create clones of clones of clones?) ) and rotate them accordingly. I admit, for 40 objects it's pretty tedious. I hope for Inkscape that there is a simpler solution.
Other ways could possibly be with "Pattern along path", however together with clones I don't know how.
*Reposition rotation center:
click your object twice and drag&drop the center cross to another location. Snapping to other objects/points facilitates exact positioning.

Re: Tiled clones
Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Re: Tiled clones
Sorry, Inkscape, I take my words back.
It can be done with tiled clones:
1. Create object, shift Rotation center to your desired center/rotation point
2. Create Tile Clones:
2a) Scale Tab: for example all 0%, except Shift X per column: -100%
2b) Rotation Tab: your angle and check cumulate
3. Rows, columns: 1 x your number of clones
4. Create
In your case, you probably haven't repositioned the rotation center out of your object.
Hope it works. Now, I also know how

Re: Tiled clones
(If the objects are different, so clones won't do, then the polar coordinates tab of the 'arrange' dialog or the 'Scatter' extension will also work for this)

Re: Tiled clones
Hey,
@Theozh: If i try your first option, the center jumps onto a corner of the block and the block starts rotating around it's own corner.
At your 2nd option, i set the angle at 90degr in Per column and Rows, column at 1 x 4. This just to try and make it work.
But it makes clones at his own position. If clicked on block it says at the bottom, Path 7 nodes in layer. Is that ok or does it need to be an object?
@tylerdurden: I looked at that too. Didn't manage that. But it's unclear to me what exactly to check, uncheck and what to fill in where?
Thank you already.
Any other suggestions?

Re: Tiled clones
Hey,
@Raspi: yes something like that but other kind of blocks.
@tylerdurden: that's exactly what i've been doing! But it seems to make clones around another centerpoint??
Maybe i should try a new page and try it again.

Re: Tiled clones
Are you using Inkscape 0.91, @Bossit? If so, creating a new layer and doing the cloning there will help. Or switching to 0.92.1.

Thats the great things about clones, you can change the shape and posting and all the others will follow !
You should post a svg file of your setup, maybe then we can see why you are not succeeding.
Re: Tiled clones
Hello,
Thanks to all of you! I managed to do it like i wanted. I made a new page and did it all over again and than it worked.
Don't know for which reason it didn't work on the other page.
But got another question which bothers me now. It's about cutting out.
I guess i need to make a new Post about that.
Thank you very much!!

Re: Tiled clones
Your problems were probably caused by a known bug. Starting on a new layer, or in a new document avoids it.
