new to inkscape
Help please. I have try several inkscape tutorials and have try to follow them exactly, but I'm having no luck. I would like to weld some letters together. In the tutorial they said to go to view, display mode and click outline. My problem is when I do this I can't see the letters that I'm working on. Shouldn't I be able to, what am I doing wrong? Please help Thanks
Re: new to inkscape
What exactly do you mean by weld?
Outline mode is just a different way of displaying objects, you don't see colors and stroke width but just the outline. I'm not sure why outline mode would be necessary for some operations. Can you link to the tutorial you are following?

Re: new to inkscape
Now I understand why the outline mode! Cutter will use exactly the lines you see in the outline mode, so using the Normal mode can be misleading.
Yes you should be able to see your text object in Outline mode, but there are cases when it may seem it disappeared. Try hitting Ctrl + a to select all objects you have in your document. You should see a box around every selected object, do you see any? Don't forget to zoom out to see more area and most importantly look in the statusbar, you will see how many objects are selected by looking there.
If there is an object but you can't see it (you only see the box when it's selected) maybe you have set the Fill and Stroke to be None. With the object selected click on one of the colors in the bottom palette, the object (text will appear). If you are in outline mode the text will be black no matter what color you applied, and the text might look a bit uneven but it's nothing to worry about.
Let us know what you find.

Re: new to inkscape
Thank you.
I did what you said, but still when I'm in outline view all I see is the dash border with the handles around it not the letter that I have typed. I went to fill & stroke and set c, m, y to 0 & k to 100. A to 100 also. Blur is 0.0 & Opacity, % is 100.0. Is this right? I really appreciate your help. Thanks

Re: new to inkscape
You have it right, you should be able to see the letter. Have you tried it with a different font? Can you see the letter as expected in Normal mode?
I'm not sure what might be wrong unless you have it masked or something but it doesn't sound you did something exotic.
What's the Inkscape version you are using (Help > About Inkscape)? Can you attach a screenshot showing the problem?

Re: new to inkscape
Yes, I can see it when I'm in normal view and I have tried different fonts and even jpg files.
I have version 0.46. I just downloaded it last night. I have messed with it all day. Its possible I could have done something to mess it up. But I have started new a dozen times.

Note that JPG files contain no editable font information.
It might be easiest to post a copy of your file for examination.
