Bound text between an inner and outer circle

Postby bandd » Sat Nov 10, 2012 9:27 am

I'm trying to create a keg collar for a brewery I'm getting off the ground and I need to be able to justify text between a large outer 7 inch diameter circle and a 2.25 inch center cut out circle. Exactly like the government warning and rupture warning appear on this example I found on google: http://beerpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/BunkerKegCollars_Mild-page-001.png.

Does anyone know how to accomplish this in inkscape?

I've tried to link the text and outer circle with alt+w, but it just seems to bind the text within the larger circle and automatically starts the text at the top of the circle. I need it placed similarly to the image above.

Thanks.

Link the text to the shape is what you want, but you just need to create a more refined shape to suit the exact placement you need. For example, create a copy of your circle shape, the cut it back so it's only as big as the space you want to allocate to the text. And then obviously remove any fill and stroke so it's invisible.

Also, in your example, the text on the left will have been "right aligned" whilst the text on the right would be "left aligned" to make the text curve around the inner circle.

Good to know I'm on the right track! And good call on the right vs left justification.

I'm having trouble figuring out how to create the shape I need. Bacially I need a rectangle that extends slightly beyond the path of the outer circle and slightly inside the path of the inner circle. Then I need to have parts of the rectangle that extend beyond the paths of the outer and inner circles lopped off. But I can't quite figure out how to do this...

Thanks!

By describing what you need, you've described what you need to do :)

Draw your circle, then draw your rectangle. Select both the rectangle and circle then and apply an "intersection" path operation. That then becomes your shape to fill with text. You can read about path operations at http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... ining.html

I've glanced over how to incorporate the small circle but I think you'll spot how to work that in once you're familiar with path operations.

Thanks microUgly!

I couldn't figure out which path operation to use. Got it to work! I really appreciate it!
