Ok, I figured this out like 10 minutes ago.
1. Draw a star, the number of corners will change your splat
2. Path-->Object to Path
3. Pull some of the nodes of the star outward, make it a little random. Try to make a pointy version of the splat you want.
4. Drag and select all the nodes, and press the "Make Symmetrical" button
5. SHAZAM!! Your star might look a bit like a weird snowflake, or closer to a final product if you're leet enough.
6. Drag the tips and either grow or shrink them. Make it look splat-like. You'll probably get a few tangles, but hey, you get what you pay for
Experiment with this and you can get some pretty interesting results. Try combining it with filters or effects, like 'jitter nodes'.

You can add some depth to your splat with a filter effect. I made one a while ago. Just drag and drop in my svg into your splat document, select your splat and apply the filter. See what happens.
